Vinicius Junior is well on course to being the next Neymar – and could be even better

Vinicius Junior is still months away from his long-awaited move to Real Madrid.

The Brazilian youngster – still only 17 years old, remember – has already agreed to move to the Spanish capital for a mind-boggling £39.6 million, but he is unable to move to Europe until he reaches 18 in July.

So in the meantime, he’s been quietly establishing himself within Flamengo’s first-team and is seemingly tearing up the Brazilian top-flight in much the same way a certain Neymar did back when he was 17.

— Vinicius Jr (@vini11Oficial) February 20, 2018

In fact, the early similarities are striking and it further cements the reasons why Madrid were so keen to fork out such a hefty some of money for the kid just ten days after he made his first-team debut back in May.

And while his debut was widely mocked, the teenager has been somewhat of a hero for the club lately, ever-adapting to the physical aspects of the league and making several cameo appearances from the bench, frequently scoring goals and wowing fans with his performances.

In fact, this season, in 1,380 minutes of football at senior level, Vinicius has scored eight goals – which is one more than Neymar managed in his first 1,500 minutes at Santos.

Little geniusReuters

Once he does move to Madrid, it seems he’ll start working in and around the club’s first-team squad during pre-season, before the coaching staff decide whether his development would be better suited on the peripherals of the senior side for the upcoming season, or if he should go out on loan.

However, if they do go for the second option, he’s expected to join a European club and not a Brazilian one (sorry, Flamengo).

Retro NeymarReuters

So, having already broken one of Neymar’s earliest records and, of course, mesmerising Madrid’s scouts with his talents during the Under-17 South American Championship last year, can he really become Los Blancos’ answer to Neymar?

At 18, Neymar had firmly established himself as Santos’ standout star (alongside his good friend Ganso) and was naturally compared to the likes of Robinho and the great Pele.

Clubs in Europe did start sniffing around the youngster at the point – notably, Premier League side West Ham – but he didn’t leave Santos until 2013, at the age of 21.

Santos boys

So in terms of national and international recognition, Vinicius is seemingly ahead of the Paris Saint-Germain star at this early stage in his career.

Vinicius’ excellent goal against Botafogo a few weeks back and his cocky, cry-baby celebration afterwards caused quite a stir in Brazil, with even Neymar getting involved in the national discussion by defending the youngster’s antics.

Responding to an Instagram post from Brazilian football account Futebol Na Tela, Neymar wrote: “Football is mad. If your team wins against that of your friend and you celebrate it, you are making a mistake. You will be punished.”

Neymar posing with Vinicius last year

And it’s not just Neymar who’s taking note of the youngster’s performances.

Late last year, Vinicius revealed that his future Madrid teammate and compatriot Marcelo was sending him regular messages of praise for his performances, further establishing his confidence ahead of the big move.

He said: “I have not spoken with Zidane, but I did with Marcelo, Casemiro and Danilo about what it is like living in Madrid.

“Whenever I play a good game, Marcelo sends me a message. I’m always waiting for that message.”

It won’t be long until we see him throw on the white shirt of Madrid, and with the waning influence of Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema in the club’s attack, the move could come at exactly the right time for one of world football’s most fascinating young talents.

FIFA 18: EA forgot to upgrade 2 Premier League stars and accidentally DOWNGRADED another

FIFA 18 fans have noticed EA Sports may have accidentally forgotten to upgrade two Premier League stars – and accidentally downgraded another.

Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino, Spurs’ Heung Min Son and Man United’s Paul Pogba have all had inconsistent ‘upgrades’, despite being owed ratings boosts in the FIFA 18 Ratings Refresh.

The three stars were among the 23 Premier League players to be awarded new, improved Ultimate Team cards last week – although the stats reveal it hasn’t quite worked out that way.

Lets take a closer look, shall we.

Roberto Firmino

Here’s Firmino’s card before the winter upgrades.

Firmino’s stats before the upgrade

Now let’s have a look at the new stats.

And after

You can see that his heading accuracy has been lowered by two points stats and he’s had various small defensive downgrades.

This issue is present on all of Firmino’s inform cards, which have been downgraded similarly in those areas.

Heung Min Son

Here’s his old card And the new

The winter non-inform Son is missing a shooting upgrade as shown on his face card stats.

He has a +1 upgrade to his shooting yet in-game his shooting stats did not receive an upgrade. It is the exact same values as his old non inform card.

Paul Pogba

Pogba’s old card The Frenchman’s new card

Despite the fact he’s got +1 dribbling in his new card, his dribbling stats were not upgraded. Some would say it’s deserved, though, as Pogba’s not having the best time at United right now.

According to fans on Reddit, EA is said to be aware of the issue and is putting it right.

Elsewhere, EA revealed the Serie A players who had ratings boosts over the weekend.

Gary Neville brutally DESTROYS Arsenal’s performance and even Arsenal fans agree

OK that was not a good performance Arsenal.

Despite a brief glimmer of fight shown in the first half Man City took the Gunners apart pretty comprehensively.

Gooners will have hated watching their team succumb to City so easily but not as much as Gary Neville hated watching.

Firstly Arsenal demonstrated some pure schoolboy defending as City’s keeper Claudio Bravo assisted Sergio Aguero for the first goal.

Vincent Kompany managed to outpace Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang a while before he double City’s lead from a corner.

Then David Silva killed the game with a classy turn in the box and shot into the bottom corner.

Fair to say Kompany enjoyed his goalNews Group Newspapers Ltd

Arsenal were not at the races and Neville did not stop in his criticism of the Gunners.

The Sky Sports commentator was livid with Arsenal’s performance in such a big game.

Here are just a few choice words of his from today.

Ozil wondering if he can tippex out his contractReuters

It really is just shocking defending in all forms of football,” he said about the first goal on Sky Sports.

“A soft-centre. That is Arsenal all over for the last 10 years. The goal is such a bad one to give away and in a cup final, it’s unforgivable.

“That is pathetic defending. The goalkeeper is in no-man’s land and he can see it coming a mile off, but it’s really bad from Shkodran Mustiafi. People will say it’s a nudge, but that’s rubbish. It’s terrible defending. Woeful from Mustafi.

“We were told he was pretty good.”Getty - Contributor

Then in reference to the third goal with Granit Xhaka and Aaron Ramsey strolling back to help the defenders Neville let loose.

“Arsenal are an absolute disgrace.

“Ramsey and Xhaka are an absolute disgrace, walking on the football pitch at Wembley. Spineless.”

And then the camera panned to a crying child in the Arsenal end and Neville lined up his killer blow, “That’s what you’ve caused.”

However the criticism did not stop there.

“This is a dark dark day [for Arsenal] the team has not shown up.

“Arsenal just failed full stop. There is nothing I’ve liked about this Arsenal performance, not one single thing.

“The Arsenal player have had far too many chances over too many years and proved to us they are not good enough,” the furious commentator said.

“Arsenal have been pathetic, absolutely pathetic.”

Enjoy your Sunday evenings Arsenal fans.

Is Jose Mourinho’s management style now officially out of fashion?

It seems almost fashionable to give Jose Mourinho a good bashing right now.

The Special One is public enemy number one, a fun sponge and a dementor to entertainment in the final third.

Getty - Contributor Needs to work on his pout[/caption]

But, despite not being his massive fan, I’m going to try and probably fail to mount a defence for him after Manchester United’s latest uninspiring result.

The reaction to last night’s 0-0 draw in Sevilla has largely been negative, with Mourinho accused of parking the bus with the handbrake on while David De Gea continued to shine.

Getty - Contributor Pogba and co. couldn’t find a way through against Sevilla[/caption]

CONTEXT

United were unfortunate in the fact they were the last of the English clubs to play.

Liverpool and Manchester City had blown their opponents away in their first legs while Tottenham and Chelsea earned plaudits for battling draws against two of Europe’s superpowers.

CameraSport - Getty Liverpool ripped Porto to shreds[/caption]

United, then, had a tough act to follow.

Had they played first, the stalemate in Seville might be viewed as a fairly reasonable result against an opponent who averaged two goals a game in the group stages.

They also drew home and away against Liverpool, so needed to be stifled.

Getty - Contributor Banega and co. needed taming[/caption]

SHORT MEMORIES

Mourinho’s ‘anti-football’ really isn’t all that dissimilar to the tactics employed by Sir Alex Ferguson.

Hear me out here.

Here is his recent record away from home in Champions League knockout fixtures:

Jose Mourinho record of goals in last 10 away KO ties in Europe reads 1-1-1-0-1-1-1-1-1-0

— Ian Dennis (@Iandennisbbc) February 21, 2018

Hardly setting the world alight.

But when you compare it to Ferguson’s approach in Europe the criticism seems entirely unjustified.

On their way to winning the Champions League under Fergie in 2007/08, United scored more than one away goal just once in the knockout rounds and twice in the entire competition.

Getty - Contributor Fergie did the double in 2007/08[/caption]

In 2010/11, like United last night, Ferguson’s Red Devils carved out a 0-0 draw at Marseille in their last 16 first leg before winning the tie 2-1.

They would go onto reach the final, beaten only by Pep Guardiola’s masterful Barcelona side.

Fergie, of course, was hailed a tactical genius while Mourinho is being hung out to dry for very similar results.

AFP A results manager[/caption]

Are pundits and fans alike forgetting this is a two-legged affair?

There are 180 minutes to prepare for but, perhaps skewed by Liverpool and City’s thumping first-leg wins, punters won the job done in 90.

Mourinho has consistently deployed a cautious and conservative approach in European away games, so why exactly did people expect any different against Sevilla?

AP:Associated Press Another results manager – but a man under pressure[/caption]

FASHIONABLE MANAGERS

Football is no longer purely a results business.

That’s becoming blatantly clear, particularly in the eye of the consumer.

Fans of the biggest clubs are no longer satisfied by clinching three points; they demand their side puts on a show in the process.

EPA United fans want more from their side[/caption]

United fans probably have a right to feel jealous considering City, Liverpool and Spurs are obliterating teams on a regular basis this season.

But if it’s entertainment they’re after, Mourinho isn’t the answer.

If it’s trophies, however, he is, as proven by the two he delivered in his debut season at Old Trafford.

AFP or licensors Trophies are the be all and end all… or are they?[/caption]

The argument then is Mourinho – a results manager – is now going out of fashion.

While Ferguson and even Sam Allardyce, to some extent, were so successful 10 years ago the supporters now want to be thrilled.

Winning alone just isn’t good enough… which may signal the end of Mourinho’s era at the top.

Eintracht Frankfurt fans throw hundreds of tennis balls on to the pitch because they hate Mondays

And you thought you hated Mondays.

Eintracht Frankfurt fans threw hundreds of tennis balls on to the pitch at the Waldstadion last night as a protest against the match being played on a Monday night.

The Bundesliga fixture between the Eagles and RB Leipzig was postponed for 15 minutes as ground staff cleared the balls.

The Frankfurt supporters’ club expressed their intentions last week, saying they would ‘make it clear they did not like it’ in reference to the scheduling.

Monday night football is not as common in Germany as it is in England and clearly the Frankfurt fans believe that their team is best enjoyed at the weekend.

RB Leipzig played away to Napoli in the Europa League on Thursday night, hence why they were given an extra day to prepare.

One for the GCSE German gangGetty - Contributor

Not that it did them any good though.

The hosts won 2-1 courtesy of goals from Timmy Chandler and the enigmatic Kevin-Prince Boateng.

The visitors were awarded a penalty by the referee but the decision was overruled by trusty VAR.

New balls pleaseAP:Associated Press

Why tennis balls?

There doesn’t seem to be any significant symbolism; although several other clubs, including Hull and Charlton, have used tennis balls when protesting in recent times.

Danny Rose shows a touch of class with his Ryan Mason tribute

Danny Rose got plenty of stick from Spurs fans for a perceived attempt to engineer a move away from the club in the summer.

But he showed a genuine touch of class when Harry Kane scored what looked like being the winner in a pulsating FA Cup tie against Rochdale.

While most of Spurs’ players ran off to celebrate with Kane, Rose peeled off and shouted Ryan Mason’s name down the camera.

He gave the lens a kiss before going over the celebrate with his team-mates.

Mason was forced to retire after struggling to make a full recovery from a shocking head injury suffered against Chelsea in January 2017.

A brilliant show of support from Rose towards his former team-mate.

Rose and Mason were team-mates at SpursReuters

Mason was clearly watching on as he tweeted following the celebrations.

At the time it looked like Kane’s penalty, on the ground he made his Football League debut, would be enough to take Spurs through to the next round.

Ian Henderson put Rochdale ahead at half-time before goals from the impressive Lucas Moura and Kane turned the game around.

But there was still time for the magic of the FA Cup to take hold.

Substitute Steve Davies popped up in the 93rd minute to equalise and earn Rochdale a replay.

Willian followed his first strike with a number of stylish flicks and tricks as he continued to wow the Stamford Bridge crowd.

And one particular piece of skill will likely be shared infinitely by the YouTube compilation merchants.

Collecting a short corner from Cesc Fabregas, Willian initially looked to whip a cross into the Hull box.

Now you see it Now you don’t Fabregas unfortunately fluffed his lines to deny Willian a brilliant assist

With a couple of swift movements, the Brazilian ‘elasticoed’ the ball through two Hull players and returned it to Fabregas.

But did he mean it?

Initially it looked like he was trying to take on the defender himself rather than find his team-mate.

Whether it was intentional or not it was certainly easy on the eye.
