Eintracht Frankfurt fans throw hundreds of tennis balls on to the pitch because they hate Mondays

And you thought you hated Mondays.

Eintracht Frankfurt fans threw hundreds of tennis balls on to the pitch at the Waldstadion last night as a protest against the match being played on a Monday night.

The Bundesliga fixture between the Eagles and RB Leipzig was postponed for 15 minutes as ground staff cleared the balls.

The Frankfurt supporters’ club expressed their intentions last week, saying they would ‘make it clear they did not like it’ in reference to the scheduling.

Monday night football is not as common in Germany as it is in England and clearly the Frankfurt fans believe that their team is best enjoyed at the weekend.

RB Leipzig played away to Napoli in the Europa League on Thursday night, hence why they were given an extra day to prepare.

Not that it did them any good though.

The hosts won 2-1 courtesy of goals from Timmy Chandler and the enigmatic Kevin-Prince Boateng.

The visitors were awarded a penalty by the referee but the decision was overruled by trusty VAR.

Why tennis balls?

There doesn’t seem to be any significant symbolism; although several other clubs, including Hull and Charlton, have used tennis balls when protesting in recent times.
