Fantasy football tips: Kevin De Bruyne has picked up a ‘serious injury’ in training and put managers on alert

We only got to see a brief glimpse of him at the weekend.

Kevin de Bruyne was one of the must have picks in fantasy football at the start of the season.

The Belgian wizard was the third highest scorer on Dream Team last season, racking up a hefty 284 points, a tally bettered only by Harry Kane (376) and Mo Salah (412).

De Bruyne’s popularity is highlighted by the fact that he is the third most selected player on Dream Team, with a mammoth 46% of managers snapping him up.

The 27-year-old is currently the highest selected midfielder by a considerable amount, with his Man City teammate Leroy Sane (28%), someway behind him in second place.

All of these stats make the news that De Bruyne has picked up a ‘serious injury’ in training, even more worrying for fantasy football managers.

Pep Guardiola’s talisman is said to have suffered knee ligament damage during a training session with his side on Wednesday.

The exact extent of the injury is still unknown, however, it is rumoured to be a similar problem to the one that ruled him out for two months in 2016.

If the initial reports are correct, De Bruyne could be out of action for City’s next eight games, beginning with the favourable fixture of Huddersfield at home on Sunday.

The Belgian would also miss a potentially crucial trip away to Anfield to face Liverpool.

The news is a big blow for Guardiola, who was doing his best to ease the playmaker back into things, following his player’s heavy involvement at the World Cup.

De Bruyne’s injury has sent the world of fantasy football into meltdown, with managers rushing frantically to get the injured £6.5m star out of their teams.

Ahead of City’s next game, managers will be drawing up a list of potential replacements for the Belgian.

One potential option that Dream Team managers might look to could be De Bruyne’s City teammate Bernardo Silva.

The Portuguese playmaker was a standout performer in City’s Community Shield victory over Chelsea, as well as a scorer in the victory over Arsenal.

Silva is a more cost-effective option than his teammate, and is priced up at just £3.5m in Dream Team.

Another potential replacement for the stricken star could be Chelsea’s Eden Hazard.

The Belgian picked up just three fewer points than his countryman in last year’s game (281) and has been a consistent performer in fantasy football for years.

Hazard is priced up at £6m on Dream Team, leaving you with an additional £.5m to invest elsewhere in your team after you remove De Bruyne.

With £6.5m extra now to play with, the player who you pick to replace De Bruyne could be the biggest decision you make all season.

No pressure…
